For lovers of the mountains and the outdoors, Khancoban is an excellent base from which to explore the snowy mountains and Kosciusko national park.
This little town in the high country was built to house workers on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme, considered to be an engineering marvel.
Khancoban is south of Tumbarumba, on the scenic Alpine Way that connects Thredbo and Jindabyne, and just 13 kilometres from the Victorian border.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities from hiking and mountain bike riding in nearby Kosciuszko National Park, water sports and fishing at Khancoban Pondage or a splash at the modern local pool (open during the summer months). Enjoy a BBQ or picnic at the Foreshore Reserve and in Winter, make the town your base for day trips to the snow fields at Thredbo or cross-country skiing in the back country.
